The beautiful city of Burlington, with a population of over183,000 according to the 2016 Canada census, is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and conveniently located between Toronto & Niagara Falls. In 2019, Macleans magazine ranked Burlington as the best place to live in Canada based on an analysis of over 400 Canadian cities over a range of features. Burlington’s amenities, low crime rate and its culture and community helped to elevate it to the number one spot in Canada. Burlington has developed from a quiet bedroom community to a savvy, revitalized waterfront city with the famed Spencer Smith Park along the shore of Lake Ontario. Spencer Smith Park is the recreational centre of Burlington’s 23 km long Waterfront Trail with a wide promenade providing a magnificent view of the lake, beach and Skyway Bridge. The park boasts skating in winter and water-jet play in summer, several performance areas, historic monuments, a children’s playground, a Japanese garden and expansive lawns for leisure pursuits. It is also home to numerous free festivals such as the Sound of Music Festival, Canada Day events and the Rotary Ribfest.
Burlington is home to some of the world’s best hiking along the local Iroquoian section of the Bruce Trail and the Niagara Escarpment in the north, which is a UNESCO designated World Biosphere Reserve. Other outdoor pursuits include tobogganing, skating or skiing in the winter or swimming and hiking in the summer at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, exploring Mount Nemo Conservation Area’s cliffs near forested areas, walking the boardwalk or bird-watching at Kerncliff Park situated along the Niagara escarpment, watching the swans at LaSalle Park and swimming at Beachway Park’s sandy beach. On the border with Hamilton is the renowned Royal Botanical Gardens with the world’s largest lilac collection. Burlington offers numerous pools (both indoor and outdoor), splash pads, ice pads, community centres and golf courses. Cultural enthusiasts will appreciate the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, the many galleries at the Burlington Art Centre and museums such as the Joseph Brant Museum and Ireland House.
Burlington’s public elementary and secondary schools are part of the Halton District School Board. Burlington’s Catholic elementary and secondary schools are part of the Halton Catholic District School Board. French public elementary and secondary schools are part of the Conseil Scolaire de District du Centre Sud Ouest (CSDCSO) and French catholic elementary and secondary schools are part of the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud (CSDCCS). Several private schools are also available in the city.
